2012 Certificate in Sandplay Therapy & Symbol Work with Children, Adolescents and Adults

2012 Certificate in
Sandplay Therapy & Symbol Work
with Children, Adolescents and Adults

For Counsellors, Guidance Officers, Psychologists, Psychotherapists, Social Workers, Welfare Workers,
and Chaplains

12 days – 4 x 3-day training workshops, over 6 months

Sandplay Therapy is a hands-on, expressive counselling and psychotherapy modality that has been in use for over eighty years. Sandplay forms a bridge between verbal therapy and the expressive therapies, combining elements of each. Sandplay allows the deeper aspects of the psyche to be worked with naturally and in safety, and is highly effective in reducing the emotional causes behind difficult behaviours.

With an extensive research and literature base, Sandplay is a powerful therapeutic method for use by established professionals. It has been used with children, adolescents and adults, in schools, hospitals, welfare agencies and private therapy practices.

This course provides a thorough training, with extensive practical experience and supervision in the Expressive Therapies approach to Sandplay Therapy and Symbol Work. The method of Sandplay that will be introduced was developed by Dora Kalff in the late 1950s, from Dr Margaret Lowenfeld’s play therapy. Kalff, a colleague of the famous Swiss psychiatrist Carl Jung, created sandplay based on Analytic Psychology. Sandplay is now taught and practised around the world, supported by the International Society for Sandplay Therapy. Many school counsellors, psychologists and therapists around Australia have now trained with the Institute in the Expressive Therapies style of Sandplay, and find it a highly effective way to work, with many benefits for client and counsellor alike.

The articles in this book will be of special interest to university based educators; artists and researchers; facilitators; practitioners; educators in the social sciences; social work and social justice professionals; activists and community change agents; heritage, cultural and urban planners; healthcare professionals and public health educators; fundraisers and many others.

About Hilde
Hilde Knottenbelt (BA, Dip Ed, Dip Shiatsu, Psychodramatist) has developed and refined Creative Voice since 1987. Originally a teacher of languages, she has an ongoing passion for exploring sound, words, meaning, attunement, expressiveness and improvised singing and storytelling in groups.
There have been numerous influences on the evolution of her work.  Among the most significant are the acappella tradition of unaccompanied harmony singing, psychodrama, playback theatre, group work, body-focused therapies including shiatsu and the many many people who have participated and continue to participate in the sessions. The creative integration of these influences continues to inform and contribute to the weaving of a unique body of work.
Hilde runs workshops in Australia and New Zealand. She is currently on the teaching staff of the Australian College of Psychodrama and the Melbourne Institute of Experiential and Creative Arts Therapy. Hilde taught Creative Voice at the Council for Adult Education in Melbourne for many years and was a member of the Living Stories Playback Theatre Company. Celebrating Woman is a 7-day fundraising festival exploring woman’s health, healing & wellbeing. Workshops will be offered by experienced facilitators in the areas of Art Therapy, Yoga, Meditation, Music, Movement and more with all the funds raised going directly to the Art2Healing Project (www.theart2healingproject.org), which assists and empowers sex trafficked woman.

The Celebrating Woman Festival was dreamt into being by a group of spirited and passionate Melbourne women in early 2011. The founding member of this group Atira Tan has been working with the Art2Healing Project for the past 8 years and has dedicated her life to offering support and healing to sex trafficked women in the slums and brothels of Asia and the Pacific. The intention behind the Celebrating Woman Festival is to not only raise funding for this vital cause but also bridge the gap between women from the east and west, creating a positive outcome for both parties.

Just four weeks out from the festival and a 7 day fundraising event has been created that offers workshops for both men and woman and most importantly lends a space to celebrate woman from all walks of life. Prana House has kindly offered its location for the 7-day festival and all facilitators running workshops during the week are also volunteering their time and energy for this amazing cause. The workshops offered over the 7 days range from, Expressive Art Therapies, Yoga, Meditation, Dance, Talks & Women’s Health and Fertility. And for the hard core yogi’s there will be a non stop 9 hour Yogathon which will feature a new teacher and style of yoga on the hour.

T
he Festival will come to a close with the well-known Sisters for Sisters charity event happening at the Northcote Uniting Church, showcasing an amazing line-up of all female performers. Featuring spoken word, dance, and music, the Sisters for Sisters Event reaches into the hearts of all who bare witness to the courageous artists on stage and has established a reputation as a night not to be missed.
